Figuring out who invented the spiral notebook is an almost impossible task. Luckily it can be answered by simply check the United States Patent office, but this being such a simple idea it’s logical to believe that this was invented way before it was ever patented in the year 1983. The man who patented this idea was Edward Podosek, who also patented several other school/office supplies.

There is another article out there that says the spiral notebook was first described in an October of the year 1934 Popular Mechanics magazine. It described basically how to bind the notebook paper using a coil spring. However there was no author listed and no credit was given to anyone in the magazine. A little more digging into the patent office in the year 1935 there was in fact someone who applied for this patent. His name was W. Walter Grumbacher and he filed this application on March 1, 1935.

All production of Cuban cigars is controlled by the government of Cuba. Cuban cigars are rolled using tobacco leaves found in Cuba. The rollers of these cigars are said to be the highest skilled rollers in the entire world. Due to their quality these cigars are one of Cuba’s leading exports. However Cuba is deprived one of major market for tobacco – The United States. None of the exports from Cuba are to the U.S., which leads to the infamous question; why are Cuban cigars illegal in the united states?

The answer has to do with politics. In protest against Fidel Castro’s communist government in Cuba, President John F. Kennedy imposed a trade embargo in 1962. This embargo strictly banned the residents of the United States from purchasing Cuban cigars legally. The embargo has never been lifted and it still remains illegal to purchase Cuban cigars today. Some are smuggled into the United States but a majority of these are said to be counterfeit.
