In order to create and appropriate stage a light is required as well as a thin sheet of paper, wax paper or for a larger scaled show bed sheets or any light fabric would work. The overall goal is to have the light casting a strong shadow onto the stage screen.
When designing your own shadow puppet templates, the most important thing is to create a good resemblance of the desired object. When it comes to defining characteristics of the shadow puppet keep in mind that anything that should be emphasized needs to be made larger in proportion to the rest of the cut out. For instance if the puppet was supposed to have a pointy nose it would be a good idea to make that nose a little bit bigger in comparison to the rest of the puppet. When it comes to objects or scenery it is best to keep things kind of simple. Since the shapes are just going to be used to create the shadows its best to go with the simplest shape as possible. Art work will not show up on the shadow. Once your puppets are complete, you may desire to paint them black, as that tends to result in a crisper, clearer shadow.
