Why Did The Cambodian Genocide Occur

The deaths that occurred during the rule of the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979) in Cambodia are known as the Cambodian Genocide. Many people ask; why did the Cambodian genocide occur? The genocide started under the leadership of a man named Pol Pot. He overthrew the Khmer government in 1975 and reorganized a rugged and ruthless group of extremists. His goal was to transform Cambodia into a peasant Communist farming society.

Cambodian people living in small towns and cities were forced to evacuate or be killed. Anyone who refused to listen to the orders of the Khmer Rouge were immediately executed regardless of age or health conditions. The Khmer Rouge also falsely arrested and tortured people they suspected of being alleged enemies. Other causes of death during this period were a result of exhaustion, disease, executions, and starvation. It is estimated that over 2 million Cambodians were killed during this time period. The Vietnamese intervened and the Khmer Rouge fell in 1979.
